Pradosh Vrat, also recognized as Pradosham, is one of the most significant fasting rituals in Sanatan Dharma. This sacred fast is dedicated to Lord Bholenath and Maa Parvati. The term Pradosh means “the Twilight of the Evening.” Thus, this auspicious fast is observed during this period, which is after sunset. It falls during the 13th Lunar Day or Trayodashi Tithi of both the phases of the Moon.
This sacred fast has greater significance as its primary purpose is to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati. It is believed that when the Puja is performed in the twilight hour, the divine energy of the Lord and Goddess is at its peak. Thus, it is considered the best time to worship and perform Puja rituals. It is also believed that worshiping during the Pradosh Kal leads to attracting positivity, prosperity, and the removal of hurdles. The Pradosh Vrat is the opportunity to connect with Lord Mahadev and gain His blessings.
Now, let us discuss here all you need to know about it and how to do the Pradosh Vrat.
The Pradosh Vrat has deep-rooted historical significance and is mentioned in many scriptures, including the Shiva Purana and Skanda Purana. The historical story is associated with the Samundra Manthan or churning of the ocean by the Gods and demons.
During the churning of the cosmic ocean, Lord Mahadev consumed the poison and protected the universe. As he consumed the poison, he went into great pain, and his throat turned blue. Then, Maa Parvati came to soothe him. Thus, Pradosh Vrat is observed to pay gratitude to Lord Shiva for his sacrifice to protect the universe.
Pradosh Vrat has many benefits, as it helps attract good health and can enhance the spiritual journey of the individual. Now, its significance and benefits depend upon its types or the day it is observed.
The Pradosh Vrat includes fasting during the day and performing Puja during the twilight. It starts with waking early in the morning, taking a bath and wearing neat and clean clothes. Then, the devotees should take the Sankalp to keep the fast.
The fasting rules include eating only Satvik food or fruits, etc. However, some devotees also keep the Nirjala fast, which is without even having water. The devotees spend time chanting mantras and reciting the Pradosh story. The mantras include "ॐ नमः शिवाय" or Maha Mritunjya Mantra (ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्। उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात्॥) Chant any of these mantras 108 times.
Prepare for the Puja by cleaning the Puja space and setting the altar. Place the idols of Lord Shiva, Maa Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Nandi on the altar. The Pradosh Vrat Puja samagri includes bilva leaves (bel patra), flowers, incense sticks, fruits, sweets, and sandal paste. Light the lamp and perform Abhishek of Shivlinga with honey, ghee, milk, water, and curd. Conclude the Puja with Lord Shiva aarti. It is also considered auspicious to meditate on this day.
